Yoga for Scoliosis Part One
Elise Miller presents her internationally acclaimed workshop on working with scoliosis. This workshop is designed to present information and experience in the ways that Iyengar Yoga can be used to meet the challenges of scoliosis. We will include an anatomical background on scoliosis, identify each participant’s scoliosis, and discuss cause and effect as well as psychological consequences of scoliosis. Participants will learn optimal yoga postures for scoliosis as well as how to adapt specific yoga postures to their scoliosis. By combining the yoga postures with breathing awareness, one can develop more structural alignment of the body and become more symmetrical and balanced. Through yoga, one can find the balance point that allows the scoliosis curve to coexist with gravity and activates the body’s natural plumb line. Adjustments and props will be used to assist participants to work with their individual scoliosis.

This workshop is appropriate for anyone with scoliosis whether he/she is currently a yoga student or not. Teachers are also urged to attend to gain knowledge and be more skillful when assisting their students with scoliosis.

Description: 

On Friday, Elise will discuss the physical and psychological causes and effects of scoliosis, identify different patterns of scoliosis and introduce the most beneficial poses for scoliosis. The evening will include a power point presentation followed by a short yoga session. Emphasis will be on lengthening the spine and aligning the body with breath awareness in beginning yoga poses. In order for Elise to clearly identify your scoliosis, please wear a lighter colored top or sports bra.

On Saturday and Sunday, Participants will continue to learn to work with their particular scoliosis with a variety of yoga poses including standing poses, back strengtheners, twists, inversions and forward bends.

Becoming a Yoga for Scoliosis Trainer

Do you have interest in becoming a Yoga for Scoliosis Trainer? The Yoga for Scoliosis Part 1 workshop would fulfill the first 10 hours of the 20 hours required to get started on the Elise Browning Miller’s Yoga for Scoliosis Training program.

Laurie Blakeney 2019

Laurie Blakeney has an Advanced Level Teaching Certificate granted to her by B.K.S. Iyengar. She began her Iyengar yoga studies in 1971, and has studied annually in Pune India at the Iyengar Institute since 1983.  Laurie has served our national Iyengar Yoga community by being on the IYNAUS Board, chair of the Certification Committee, Curriculum co-chair of 4 national conventions among other committee service. 

 She brings to her class a uniquely personal and direct style of teaching, challenging students while helping them to enjoy exploring their potential. She loves to include artistic and philosophical considerations while staying true to the precision we know to be a cornerstone of the Iyengar method. She is also Anne’s mentor in the assessment process.

Jaki Nett Iyengar Yoga Workshop 2018

From Napa Valley, California, Jaki Nett has taught yoga since 1976 and Iyengar yoga since 1982. She holds an Intermediate Senior 1 Teaching Certificate, the highest certification of any African American woman in the United States. Jaki has studied under the tutelage of the world-renowned yoga master BKS Iyengar and Geeta Iyengar. Jaki has an MA in Humanistic Psychology, and weaves her research in functional anatomy into her teaching. Her bright, focused energy and straight-forward teaching style inspires and guides students through the challenges and rewards of a committed practice.
